The house is conceived as a clearing in the forest and is sited within an existing natural clearing.&nbsp; The building is arranged as a series of enclosed spaces - under an expansive roof - around a central courtyard. Private spaces - bedrooms and bathrooms - face outward to the forest, and the living spaces face inward to the sunny landscaped courtyard. This holiday house is designed to encourage outdoor living. Occupants move between rooms via covered decks, creating a further connection to the surroundings and the weather. The house works for two people or a crowd, with generous covered outdoor spaces extending the small footprint of the enclosed areas. These spaces allow the house to expand, particularly in summer, with additional living and dining areas or somewhere to pitch a tent under the roof. The building touches the ground lightly. Materials and detailing were carefully considered, knowing that every part of this building would arrive by barge to the beachfront; there is no road access to this remote site. No concrete was used in the construction, and no plasterboard lines the interiors. Locally sourced tōtara is used throughout as both structure and finish, internally and externally. The interiors are intentionally warm and dark - a retreat from the outdoor spaces. The house is fully off grid, with solar power, rainwater collection, and wastewater all managed onsite. renovate and extend a 1930's brick bungalow to create more space for a growing family. The extension is located on a small flat area to the south of the existing house, with the ceiling pitched up to a high north facing window, ensuring this new kitchen and dining space is sunny and light filled. This bright open plan space contrasts to the more contained and moody interiors of the existing&nbsp;house.&nbsp;Sliding doors connect the extension to a sheltered bbq area to the east, and to a sunny patio with views over the&nbsp;suburb below to the west. The complexity of changing the brick internal walls in the existing house meant that layout changes were minimised, with small alterations making possible an additional bedroom and a new ensuite. Consistent materials and colours link the existing and new parts&nbsp;of the house - with&nbsp;a new brick for the extension complementing the old, timber cabinetry and joinery, and strong colours throughout. 2025 23:27:14 +0000 Patchwork Architecture https://patchworkarchitecture.co.nz/Stephs-House Steph’s House Steph worked through a complex subdivision process - creating a new section behind the existing semi-detached unit on this site - to be able to design and build this home. The result is a beautiful, deceptively simple house, which makes the most of the site's expansive views. The southern side of the house faces a public walkway, and offers glimpses of harbour views through the house, while still ensuring privacy for Steph and her family. The northern&nbsp;side opens out to deck space and steps down to the garden. This single level three bedroom home is relatively compact, but feels generous. The upside down truss roof (a common, economical roof structure) gives surprising volume to the rooms. Cabinetry, hardware and materials throughout have been thoughtfully designed and selected, and ensure this feels like a warm and inviting home. The house is arranged over two levels, with living spaces (and off street carparking) at street level, and bedrooms below. Each level opens onto a generous north facing balcony, giving&nbsp; views of the birds swooping through the valley. Triangular cut-outs to the east and west sides of the balconies increase the views and sun, whilst maintaining privacy should the neighbouring sites be similarly developed. A third lower level deck allows for future expansion of the house.&nbsp; Inside, materials include timber linings, green marmoleum floors, and surprising colours to the bathroom. Pool House project is an adaptive reuse of a derelict public swimming pool in Whanganui. The pool was built in 1912 with changing rooms and a new kiosk added in the 1970's, and was operational as a public pool until 2006 when it was closed permanently. The new owners of the site provided Patchwork with a simple brief - to create a warm three bedroom home, with lots of space for books and art. The new rectangular building sits in the corner of the site, continuing the line of the existing concrete block changing sheds.&nbsp; The simple plan is divided into "lanes" by triangulated roof trusses, which loosely reference pool flags and the existing kiosk. The house is almost entirely solid to the access way behind, and almost entirely glazed to the poolside, looking out to the large pool which has been converted to a sunken garden. (The smaller pool has been retained for summer swimming). Materially the project is simple and robust, with ply linings and concrete blocks exposed to the interior, coloured aluminium panels and glass to the facade, and opaque polycarbonate cladding above the sliding doors. single level - an unexpected result on this steep site. The 100 square metre upper floor - with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and living spaces - is supported by a central concrete core at the lower level, which contains the entry, laundry and a separate office space.&nbsp; This is a house designed on a rigorous grid allowing for very efficient planning. A slender exposed steel structure, and alternating 900mm wide aluminium cladding and glazed panels keep that rhythm around the facade. Details throughout have been executed perfectly by the owner builder.&nbsp; This home opens up onto a variety of outdoor spaces - from a covered deck and lawn at the entry level, a sunny deck off the +0000 Patchwork Architecture https://patchworkarchitecture.co.nz/Travancore Travancore House The Travancore house is a warm, generous and comfortable family home: 3 bedrooms, a large garage, and some flat outdoor spaces, built on a compact 186 square metre slope in front of an existing house.&nbsp; The house nestles into the hillside, with a gabled roof form similar to neighbouring houses,&nbsp; helping this newcomer sit comfortably in the street. The material palette is simple both inside and out - white, concrete, timber, and a few surprises, like the flash of green to the soffit on the mid-level. Upstairs contains living spaces, two bedrooms and a bathroom, all with lofty ceilings following that gable line, and a dramatic northern view down the valley, toward the city. Downstairs, another bedroom, bathroom, and the front door, opening out onto the greenhouse deck. This flexible space can be sheltered or open - controlled by moving large semi-transparent screens - giving options in the often windy Wellington weather. The design turns the often undesirable ‘party wall’ into the central feature in this duplex building. The insitu concrete party wall that joins (and separates) the two dwellings is arranged in a tetris like fashion, containing internal stairs, storage, and nooks within each home. It also provides acoustic and fire separation between the two, and structurally anchors the building to the steep site. The simple form - a single mono pitched roof the steep hillside - tucks the dwellings into the hill, and allows for private green outlooks from each dwelling. North facing verandahs at each level, with floor to ceiling glazing, allow light and sun deep into the interiors.
