Drews Ave

This Whanganui project was part of Waka Kotahi’s Innovating Streets programme, which supported councils across the country to undertake temporary urban interventions to make streets safer and more accessible for all users.

Working with a budget of less than $100K (including fabrication and consultant costs), and a very short time frame from design to implementation, this project included covered seating areas, planting, table tennis, drinking fountains, bins and bike racks.

Heavy concrete troughs, corten steel, macrocarpa decking, and recycled hardwood sleepers were used for the project  - materials which can stand up to the wear and tear in a well used public space, and which give a sense of what a permanent intervention might look like.

Located adjacent to a number of hospitality businesses, and near the Saturday morning riverside market this intervention has transformed the street - allowing for public gathering and an enhanced sense of community.
